A safety note before you open anything

A microwave stores a dangerous charge in its high-voltage capacitor even after it is unplugged. The magnetron, diode and transformer sit behind the cabinet with that capacitor. Do not remove the outer cover to look for the fault. Describe the symptom, give us the model number from the label inside the door frame, and leave the cabinet closed.

Symptoms we repair and what usually causes them

Runs, but the food stays cold

The light comes on, the turntable turns and the timer counts down, but nothing heats. This is the classic sign of a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a door interlock switch that lets the controls run without powering the heating circuit.

Sparking or arcing inside

Usually a damaged or greasy waveguide cover, chipped enamel inside the cavity, a metal-trimmed dish, or a worn rack support. Left alone, arcing burns the cavity and eventually the magnetron.

Dead: no display, no light, no response

A blown internal line fuse is the common cause, and it often blows because a door switch failed. Thermal cut-outs and the main control board are the next suspects.

Turntable will not turn

The turntable motor, the coupler it drives, or a cracked roller ring. Straightforward parts, and worth fixing because uneven heating follows.

Buttons do not respond

A worn membrane keypad, a stuck key, or the control board behind it. On some models a child lock looks exactly like a dead keypad, so we check that first.

Loud humming, buzzing or grinding

A magnetron on its way out hums loudly. Grinding usually points to the turntable motor or, on over-the-range units, the stirrer or exhaust fan motor.

Door will not latch, or the unit stops when the door is touched

Latch hooks, hinges and the interlock switches behind them. A misaligned door is also why many microwaves stop mid-cycle.

Over-the-range extras: light and exhaust fan

Burnt-out cooktop light sockets, exhaust fan motors, seized dampers and clogged grease filters are all repairable without replacing the unit.
